The 2nd Live To Love Eye Camp
Live To Love, International
2011-03-09

A Big THANK YOU to all the Benefactors who have helped achieve our target of 200 patients for the 2nd Eye Camp in Nepal!

Please stay tune for our 3rd Eye Camp in August in a remote city in the Indian Himalayas.

Our 3rd Eye Camp will be held in August 2011 in Ladakh, the Indian Himalayas.  We truly believe the success of meaningful programs can only be achieved by an enormous amount of collective power and we look forward to your continued support.

We like to take this opportunity to extend our profound gratitude to all generous sponsors for helping cataract patients to restore their eye sight!  Your support has repeatedly played a key role in the success of our sight-saving programs to reduce blindness and transform the lives of cataract patients in the Himalayan regions.

For second time, Live to Love International teams up with Tilganga Institute of Ophthalomology in Nepal, co-founded by Dr. Sanduk Ruit, to organize an eye camp in March 2011. Dr Ruit is a renowned eye surgeon whose innovative small-incision cataract surgery utilizing inexpensive intraocular lenses has enabled hundreds of thousands of poor cataract patients of Nepal and other countries to restore eyesight. Druk White Lotus Clinic in Kathmandu will also actively participate this forthcoming eye camp by providing support in terms of facilities as well as trained human resource. KEY FACTS ABOUT VISUAL IMPAIRMENT & BLINDNESS

Source: World Health Organization (WHO)

  • About 314 million people are visually impaired worldwide, 45 million of them are blind.
  • Most people with visual impairment are older, and females are more at risk at every age, in every part of the world.
  • About 87% of the world's visually impaired live in developing countries.
  • The number of people blinded by infectious diseases has been greatly reduced, but age-related impairment is increasing.
  • Cataract remains the leading cause of blindness globally, except in the most developed countries.
  • Correction of refractive errors could give normal vision to more than 12 million children (ages five to 15).
  • About 85% of all visual impairment is avoidable globally.

SITUATION IN NEPAL

The blindness situation is dire in developing countries such as Nepal. 50% of the avoidable blindness is caused by cataract. The per capita income of an average Nepalese is around US$1,100 (2008 estimate) and 42% of the population live below poverty line. Most people with impaired vision cannot afford a cataract surgery, which on average costs about $3,279 per eye (source: www.AllAboutVision.com).

COST OF SURGERY FOR EYE CAMP

With the collaboration with Tilganga Institute of Ophthalomology and a more experienced team of volunteers at the Druk White Lotus Clinic, together with a better equipped set of facilities made possible through excess funds raised during the 1st Eye Camp in March 2010, the cost of each surgery for one eye for the 2nd Eye Camp is now reduced significantly to US$150. Target number of patients to help : 200
Cost of sponsoring surgery for each patient : US$150

Just imagine... after all these years living in darkness...
they thought they'd never see their beloved ones and the world again...
... then suddenly... when they opened their eyes, they could see the flowers and the colors of life...

With your help, this miracle of light and joy will happen again and again!
